FAQs - Emergency Contraceptives

When should a woman use EC?
|
A woman should use emergency contraception if she doesnt want to become pregnant and she has had unprotected sex (vaginal sexual intercourse without using any other contraceptive, the regular contraceptive method failed, or forced sex). If a woman wants to use EC pills they should be taken within 120 hours (5 days), or if she wants to have a copper T IUD inserted, it should be inserted within five days of unprotected sex, because early use of EC increases effectiveness. |

Does EC cause abortion?
Emergency contraceptive pills are not the same as the abortion pill. Emergency contraception can not end a pregnancy once it has started. Emergency contraceptive pills dont have any effect if a woman is already pregnant. If a woman decides to use an IUD for emergency contraception, the health care provider will (should) test her first to confirm she is not already pregnant.
