FAQs - Lactation Amenorrhea Method (LAM)

Why should a six month postpartum mother stop using LAM?
After six months the baby needs more food supplements than breast milk, such as vegetables, cereals and fruits. That breaks one of the 3 conditions of LAM.  The efficacy rate of LAM drops dramatically after 6 months postpartum.

How does LAM work?
The infant suckling suppresses the production of the hormones that are necessary for ovulation. Without ovulation, pregnancy cannot take place.

How to use LAM?
Mother needs to start immediately or as soon as possible after deliver, putting baby on her breast, or anytime within the first two months.

Breastfeed baby on demand and at least every 4 hours during day and 6 hours during the night from both breasts (at least 10 minutes from each breast).

Don't give the baby any supplementary food or fluids, s/he does not need them.

Consult a health care provider regarding a complementary modern contraceptive method for increased efficacy.  A modern method should be adopted before the return of your menstrual cycle or when the baby is 6 months old.

Can a mother with HIV/AIDS use LAM?
Research has found that the HIV/AIDS virus can be transmitted from mother to child through breast milk, therefore in countries where artificial milk is available and hygiene conditions are good, it is better to avoid breast feeding and formula milk.  If formula is not available or not easily accessible and in many developing countries babies die due to infectious diseases, the World Health Organization advises that mothers continue breastfeeding to transfer immunity to their babies.

Is breast feeding enough for a six month old baby?
Yes, breast milk contains all the nutritional supplements needed for a baby until 6 months of age.  Additionally, breast milk provides immunity for the baby during a period when the baby’s body is not fully capable to establish its own immunity for some illnesses.

Shall a mother keep using LAM if she or her baby is ill?
Yes.  The mother should seek medical advice and act accordingly, however, in most cases, the mother should keep breastfeeding her baby if either one is ill as breastfeeding provides good immunity for the baby.

When should a mother start giving her baby foods besides breast milk?
Usually when a baby is 6 months of age, and to encourage the baby to keep breastfeeding, the mother should always breast feed before giving any type of food for her baby.
