For a list of Frequently Asked Questions on Vacuum Aspiration please refer to the Ipas website.

For a list of FAQs on Medical Abortion please refer to:

  • Fatal Infection and Mifepristone Medical Abortion, Gynuity Health Projects and Reproductive Health Technologies Project, 2006
These FAQs give medical abortion providers and women’s health advocates the language to discuss the occurrence of severe infections caused by Clostridium sordellii following mifepristone-misoprostol medical abortion so they are able to present the science in an informed and responsible manner.

FAQs - Surgical Abortion Methods

What can a woman expect during a Vacuum Aspiration procedure?

Vacuum aspiration, either manual or electrical, are minor surgical procedures. During the procedure a woman is positioned as if she is having a pelvic exam.  A woman is given a local anesthetic and if necessary the cervix is dilated.  A thin tube is then inserted into the uterus and attached either to a manual, handheld syringe (MVA) or an electric vacuum (EVA) which suctions out the contents of the uterus.

How long does the Vacuum Aspiration procedure take to complete?

The procedure is generally completed within 15 minutes.

What can a woman expect when she goes in to have a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure?

D&C is a minor surgical procedure.  Women are often given general or local anesthesia.  A woman will be asked to position herself on the table as if she were having a pelvic exam.  The cervix will be dilated sometimes starting the night before the procedure with special osmotic dilators (a tube or small sponge that absorbs moisture from the surrounding tissues of the cervix and swells to slowly expand the cervix) and/or with mechanical dilators used during the procedure.  Once the cervix is sufficiently dilated, a curved instrument will be inserted to scrape the lining of the uterus to remove the contents of the uterus.

How long does the D&C procedure take to complete?

The entire procedure generally is completed in 10 to 20 minutes.

What can a woman expect when she goes in to have a dilation and evacuation (D&E)?

The D&E procedure begins in a similar fashion to the D&C procedure. Dilation of the cervix is usually begun 24 hours in advance. After the cannula (curved instrument) and sometimes other surgical instruments, depending on gestation of the fetus, are inserted to scrape and remove the contents of the uterus. Any remaining tissue is removed using vacuum aspiration.

How long does the D&E procedure take to complete?

The entire procedure generally is completed in 30 minutes.

Do surgical abortions hurt?

Women will generally receive local or general anesthesia before the procedure.  They may feel some cramping as the contents of the uterus are being removed.

When does a normal period resume after an abortion?
A woman should start menstruating normally 4 to 6 weeks after the abortion.

How soon after having an abortion can a woman resume normal activities?

It is advised to rest for a day after having an abortion.  Depending on how one feels, regular activity can be resumed the following day.

How soon after having an abortion can a woman resume sexual intercourse?
It is recommended to wait one week (or longer depending on the advice of your doctor) to resume sexual activity.
