Global strategy for the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections: 2006–2015, Key messages, WHO, 2006
The strategy offers four fundamental benefits of investing in STI control, namely: (i) reduction in STI-related morbidity and mortality; (ii) prevention of HIV through a cost-effective intervention; (iii) prevention of long-term sequelae of STIs, such as cancers, especially in women; and (iv) reduction in adverse outcomes of pregnancy (in women infected with STIs). The strategy highlights opportunities for scaling up an effective response to STI prevention and control and proposes feasible evidence-based interventions for implementation at country level.
Preparing for the introduction of HPV vaccines: policy and program guidance for countries, WHO, 2006
This guidance note is intended to alert a broad array of stakeholders – in sexual and reproductive health, immunization, child and adolescent health, and cancer control programs – to some of the key issues surrounding the introduction of HPV vaccines against cervical cancer. In particular, it highlights the contributions that national immunization programs, sexual and reproductive health programs, and cancer control programs can make in preparing for national introduction of the vaccines in the context of the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy.
