HPTN 035 (topical microbicides) effect on preventing STIs and HIV/AIDS, Microbicides Network Trials

Study description: HPTN 035 is Phase II/IIb, four-arm, multisite, randomized controlled trial comparing BufferGel and 0.5% PRO 2000/5 Gel (P) (topical microbicides for the prevention of HIV during sexual intercourse) with a placebo gel and with no gel. This study will recruit sexually active HIV-uninfected women from the following countries: Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the U.S. The primary objective of HPTN 035 is to determine the safety and effectiveness of two candidate vaginal microbicides: BufferGel and 0.5% PRO 2000 Gel (P). Study enrollment closed; results expected in 2009.

Prevalence of reproductive tract infections, genital prolapse, and obesity in a rural community in Lebanon, Mary E. Deeb et al., Bulletin of the World Health Organization 2003, 81

The study objective is to determine the prevalence of reproduction-related illnesses in a rural community in Lebanon. Data were collected through interviews with women in their homes, physical examinations and history taking by physicians in a clinic in the community, and laboratory tests. A total of 557 ever-married women aged 15–60 years were selected randomly. The study shows a low prevalence rate of STIs.
